Design Statement
Die tote Stadt (The Dead City) is a grief stricken fever dream about the transformative nature of loss, particularly within the Catholic faith. My design represented the all encompassing nature of Paul’s grief with his wife’s golden braid extended to extreme proportions creating the shape of a rosary around him, with four small tables as the Our Father beads, and his wife’s portrait as the centerpiece. I wanted to embrace the architecture and connotation of the May Chapel, our venue, by defining space with hand held vigil lanterns, utilizing the stained glass windows by lighting through them onto the performers, as well as using the aisle for our “canal”, and the choir loft for the appearance of the wife’s ghost.
