Design Statement
Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties is an allegory for the sliding scale of womanhood in the present day. My design emphasized the packaged nature of each Betty’s identity, each at a specific point along the scale with, at the top of the play, seemingly no room to shift or change. The four flats were designed as Barbie-esq boxes, based on the director’s own childhood Barbie accessory, representing each Betty as they’re viewed by society– dimensionless and singular. The floor is a folded out Betty box, continuing to show the almost commercial way each character is described, down to sharing the same name.
